99 Restaurant Groton – Quick and Easy Take Away

It was a bit later than I had expected and I didn’t really feel like waiting for a table so I called in a take away order. I ordered from the winter specials menu and got the Sirloin and Baked Scallops with an order of steamed broccoli as my vegetable choice.

The order was ready for me when I arrived, I paid and headed back to my hotel room. The order came in a large take out order box, this made the order seem a little smaller than it really was. I also got a knife and fork pack with a salt and a pepper packet and a napkin. The knife impressed me as it did a great job of cutting the steak.

The steak was cooked just the way I like it, medium rare, and was nice and tender and very flavorful. There were not as many scallops as I had expected, but for the price it was fair enough. The scallops were baked to perfection, the cracker topping had a nice garlicy flavor to it, but I would have liked a little more of the topping. The broccoli was a bit crunchier than I prefer but was flavorful and had a bit of butter on it.

I was glad I ordered out and enjoyed the meal, even if I would have liked a few more scallops.

Hilton Gardens Groton Fishy Weekend

My weekend plans where a visit to the Mystic Aquarium and the Hilton Gardens in Groton seemed like a great place to stay, less than a 15-minute drive to the aquarium.

I always enjoy staying at Hilton properties and Hilton Gardens in Groton lived up to my expectations from Hilton. When I arrived at the hotel I found no line at the front desk, I did an online check-in the night before so my key card and reservation where already for me. A quick orientation for the hotels amenities and I was off to my room. On the way I stopped by the 24-hour hot beverage station for a coffee.

I had a 1 King Bed 1 Bedroom with Whirlpool tub room. Upon entering my room, the first thing I noticed was how spacious the main room was. The separate bedroom was also just as spacious. This was the first time I stayed someplace that had a full bath and a half bath which I found a bit odd. The suite itself was very clean and the temperature was comfortable. One thing I do like about Hiltons is that they always have a light on for when you enter your room.

The bathrooms where both spotless. The main bathroom with the whirlpool tub had plenty of fresh, clean towels as well a collection of toiletries. The living area had a nice kitchenette with a Keurig coffee maker, a minifridge, a microwave and a counter with a sink.

The main room had a pullout couch, a couple of chairs, a desk with another chair and a big screen television with a lot of local programing to choose from. The bedroom had the king bed and another television for sleepy time watching.

Sleeping was great, the room darkening shades kept out all outside light including the morning sun. The room was also very quiet, I heard no outside sounds either from the rest of the hotel or outside.

Morning and breakfast go together, and Hilton Gardens offers a mixed bag of breakfast choices. I went with the full buffet which includes everything available for the continental breakfast with a selection of fresh cooked choices including your choice of eggs and pancakes.

The buffet had a great selection. A toaster with a collection of breads and such, I had a bagel with cream cheese, some fresh baked pastries, fresh fruits and juices and a self-serve waffle station. My eggs where perfectly prepared as a ham and cheese omelet. Staff was there doing a great job of keeping everything full.

After my day of adventuring and returning to my room I was greeted by a fully cleaned and restocked room. Second night of sleeping was just as wonderful as the first night. Knowing that I would be spending a couple of hours in my car driving, I had myself a light breakfast. A bowl of Red Berries Special K and a bagel. Checkout was quick and easy. A printed receipt, handed in my key cards and I was on the road.

Hilton Gardens Groton gets a double thumbs up from me for having a great staff all around. For being clean and for all around friendliness.

Mystic Aquarium Weekend

My February 2018 weekend trip had me going to Mystic Connecticut for a visit to the Mystic Aquarium. I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Mystic/Groton, which was about a 15 minute drive from the aquarium.

The drive to the inn from my last job was a little over 2 hours. Not a bad drive, traffic was quiet for a Friday afternoon and I had no major slowdowns all the way to the inn. The weather was nice for an afternoon drive which added to the comfort of the whole experience. It was about 5:30 when I arrived. There was no one waiting at the front desk and as I had already done an online check-in the evening before, there was no waiting for me, I just got my keycard and the obligatory amenities speech, and I was off to my room.

After a quick shower I had to decide what I wanted for dinner. I choose to order from a local 99 restaurant and get me some take out, rather than going and waiting for seating. I really just wanted to relax for the evening. Television offered nothing that I was interested in, I am not much of a television watcher anyway, so I set up my tablet and listened to Pandora for the evening.

                                            P2090012

After a good nights sleep and breakfast at the inns restaurant I was off for my days adventures. Mystic Aquarium here I come. I had purchased my entrance ticket online a couple of months before the trip, yea I plan in advance, so I bypassed the line of people waiting to get tickets and walked right in. At the time that I went there where a handful of exhibits that where closed for renovations, because I had purchased so far in advance and paid full price, they had a 15 percent discount going on, I got a free pass to come back anytime till the end of May this year. I have a weekend planned in April that is not that far from the aquarium and I may take a visit on that weekend.

I took in the 4D movie, which was a bit shorter than I expected but still fun. Whilst I was standing at the large pool side where the beluga whales swim I had the unexpected fun of listening to a woman telling her friend how she has the ability to whistle to the whales. She stood there whistling for about 5 minutes. The whales swam by at a distance but did not swim up to where we were standing which had the woman explain to her friend how her whistle must be out of tune. It gave me a bit of a chuckle that I did keep to myself.

After a couple of hours spent walking around and checking out the exhibits I headed to my car. Just as I walked out of the aquarium proper it started to rain. I thought how lucky for me. I found it was still early and I had time to do something else. Checking out the local attractions I found that I was just a short drive from the Foxwoods Casino. It has been a while since I had gone there and I always find it a fun place to go and people watch so that was my next destination.

I spent a couple of hours walking around Foxwoods Casino Resort doing some people watching and a bit of playing the slots. I didn’t do badly at the slots, I actually think I may have broken even. After a ride back to my hotel room, I ended up spending a relaxing evening in my room watching some standup comedy and enjoying dinner.

After a good nights sleep and a good breakfast I checked out and headed home. The drive home was in the rain but the traffic was quiet and made the drive fun.

Weekend Tripin

Hi everyone, been a while since I have been out here doing the blog thing. This has been mostly a not in the mood to write thing and not knowing what to write about. I am going to try to change this and start out fresh.

With that I will give a bit of what is going in my life.

Work, well is work. I am a self employed cleaner in our family buisness. Maid service is out meat and potatoes but we also do anything that is cleaning. New constructions, home and apartment move ins and move outs, estate clean outs, window cleaning and much more. I will be posting some of my more interesting work moments from time to time.

My main daily playtime is spent playing video games. Yup, been a gamer for more years than i feel like confessing to right now. PC gaming is my main joy but I also play games on both my Android phone and tablet. I plan on writing about any games that I am playing.

Weekend trips. This is something that I have been doing for the past 4 years and going into year 5 of doing a weekend trip once a month. This is something I do mostly because my work does not allow for me to take actual vacations and I have found that they keep me mostly sane. I will let you, my readers, be the judge of my sanity.

The weekend trips will become a main focus on my blog. I will be posting reviews from places that I stay, eat and adventure at as well as a bit about my weekend adventures.  I am a member of the HiltonHonors program making my hotel of choice to be a Hilton property. I am planning on putting some focus on writing about my trips.

Weekend To The Past

Wallingford/Meridian Hilton Gardens Inn

Not the Best of Starts

After a long drive from work to the inn I was looking forward to a nice weekend. Check in with Chrissi was smooth and effortless and she informed me of all the amenities available to me. A cheery smile for the start of my weekend.

My room was inviting, clean and the air conditioning was running and the temperature was comfortable. I was looking forward to a nice weekend, then I used the microwave. Unfortunately, this caused a problem in my room, I think it may have popped a circuit breaker. I understand that these kinds of things happen and I was not upset. What matters in these instances is what happens next.

What happened next was great customer service. A quick call to the front desk to see if anything could be done about this. As it was later in the night the maintenance staff had gone home for the evening. As this had also caused my fridge to stop working and I had stuff that needed to be in there I needed something done about it. Sunni was great at solving my problem, she had a new room for me, got my key card changed and I was in the new room in less than half hour. And my weekend continued on without another hitch.

Sleeping was good, comfortable bed and not a whisper of noise from the outside. Waking up refreshed and ready to take on the new day I went to the in hotel restaurant for breakfast. A mix of made to order and buffet style. A fresh made omelet, a bit of sausage from the kitchen and some toast from the buffet. Breakfast was quick and delicious.

Off for a day of adventure.

Returning to my room after a long day was refreshing. My room was cleaned and the bed made and ready for me for my second night. Another night of quiet, restful sleep followed by a fresh breakfast.

Check out was smooth and easy. The option to have my receipt emailed to me and turn in my key card had me out the door and on my ride home in just minutes.

Thank you to the staff of the Wallingford/Meridian Hilton Garden Inn for showing me such great customer service.

Wallingford 99 Restaurant

Meal Deal for Me

The Wallingford 99 has a very comfortable country feel to its atmosphere. There was no wait for me when I went in for my dinner.

I started with a bowl of corn chowder, the soup of the day, when I ordered the waitress suggested that I take the three course meal deal and I decided that was a good idea. The chowder had a nice creamy texture to it with plenty of clams and potato.

My main course choice was sirloin steak with fried shrimp combo with fries and a side salad. The steak was cooked perfectly to my taste (med rare), the fries where well cooked and crispy, the shrimp was deep fried and very tasty and the salad was nice and fresh. Quite enjoyable dinner.

For dessert I went with the Peanut Butter Brownie Petite Treat (petites are the selection for the meal deal). Decadent is the only word that came to mind while I was eating this delicious treat. A peanut butter brownie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with some chocolate syrup, this and a glass of cold milk made for a great ending to a wonderful dinner.

The Shore Line Trolley Museum

Trains In The Sun

What a beautiful day for a short trolley ride. I enjoy trains and trolley rides and learning their histories.

The museum building itself is not large but a lot of information and displays are packed into the small space. There are a few interactive displays that can be played with as well as plenty of historic articles and paperwork on display as well. There is also a good selection of items at the gift shop.

There is also a trolley ride available. The ride takes you through the museums train yard and then through the woods and marsh. The ride is under an hour long. On the way back to the main trolley stop at the museum there is also a stop in the train yard where you get a guided tour of the buildings housing many different trolleys, subway cars and busses. A great walk through the history of public transportation. Included in the collection of cars is one of the two subway cars that survived in the World Trade Center garage.

A great place to visit if you are into trains or the history of transportation.

In Between

The ride from the trolley museum to Dinosaur State Park was a little over a half hour. When I left the museum it was a beautiful, sunny day. About half way to the park it started raining, really raining, to the point that I had to slow to a crawl on the highway.

Dinosaur State Park

Dinosaur Tracks In The Rain

On the day of my visit to the Dinosaur State Park the park was celebrating its 50th anniversary. Unfortunately, that day was also sporting heavy rains. A lot of the outside activities where not happening. Fortunately, there is plenty to see on the inside.

The park itself was created as the result of finding a large area of petrified dinosaur tracks. The main building was constructed over the large area of the petrified lake bed. Around the open area above the tracks are plenty of other prehistoric exhibits, dioramas and displays. There is also a discovery room with loads of hands on stuff for the younger visitors to explore.

I enjoyed my visit to the museum, I only wish I could have taken the walk around the outside. I may plan another visit in the future for the purpose walking the grounds.

Panda Garden

Surprise, I Got Takeout

My plans for the evening, get on a conference call with a couple of my friends and watch the final Tragically Hip concert. Take out was my best option, it gave a dinner as well as some finger foods to snack on during the concert.

My choices where Crab Rangoon, Beef Teriyaki, Boneless Spare Ribs and Pork Lo Mein. I prefer lo mein over rice personally.

The Crab Rangoon where a little bigger than I am used to, the crust was nice and crispy and they were very well filled. They had a very rich flavor and filling. The Beef Teriyaki was. Beef Teriyaki. Nothing more to really say about the Beef Teriyaki. The Boneless Spare Ribs were also a bit bigger than I am used to, they were well sauced and very tender. The Pork Lo Mein had a nice sauce to it that was rich in flavor but not too spicy.

The evening plans for me as I said was to watch the Tragically Hip’s final concert. I have a friend in Calgary Canada who got me interested into the band, I do wish that had happened many more years ago as I have found to enjoy the band a great deal. Relaxing in my room with my tablet connected to the television for the show and on Skype with my buddy in Canada made for a very relaxing evening and a very cool last night of the weekend.

Sunday morning came after a nice relaxing nights sleep. The drive home was uneventful and under a nice sky.

Pumpkin Spice??!!!!??

Pumpkin Spice

Cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. These are the spices that are used to make a pumpkin pie. As a baker for half my life I have made many pumpkin pies and mmmmm they can be tasty.

Pumpkin Pie

Then one year a popular coffee shop came up with the idea to flavor its beverage with these common spices and sell it to the general, unawares public.

Of course that was not the end of it all. Other popular coffee shops started selling a pumpkin flavored coffee as well.

What would you expect next. Exactly now you can buy bags of coffee so that you can now brew your own delicious pumpkin spiced coffee at home.

Next thing you know there are creamers that you can add to your ho hum coffee to spice it up.

I think that the pumpkin spice craze has reached insane levels. Everything can be bought with pumpkin spice flavor added to it. I reached the conclusion that this fascination with pumpkin spice has reached epic proportions today when I was at one of my customers and she had Pumpkin Spice Hershey Kisses sitting on a table.

Keep an eye on the sky for the falling pumpkins.

Random Driving

saturday-quotes

It started simply enough. Saturdays were becoming a little boring to me. I was feeling a maybe a little bit of weekend cabin fever. So my simple solution was to get in my car and drive. I had no plans, I had no destinations in mind and I had nothing that had to be done on the weekends for the most part.

HHR

This started in the early spring of 2012, Out in the morning with just my phones GPS on following my nose. On the road for until I felt like heading home. At first it was just random driving taking random turn based on random events like going the opposite direction as the guy in front of me.

NH Highway

I live on the Massachusetts New Hampshire border driving in New Hampshire is always enjoyable to me. This has made New Hampshire my main driving area. I eventually started just following some of the more rural numbered highways in New Hampshire, most of them from their starting point to their ending point. I have found this driving to be very enjoyable and still continue this to this day.

Weekend at Old Orchard Beach

The long New England winter is but a mere memory.  Spring is just about at its end and the summer is fast approaching. Time for me to go on weekend trips again. This past weekend I took a trip to Old Orchard Beach Maine.

il_fullxfull.651369557_9rui (Custom)

The weekend started on Friday after work with a hour and a half drive to the Admiral Motel. A small place, only ten rooms and the room I had was not very big but for a weekend all I need is a bed and a bathroom and they were both clean.

Diner at Famous Dave’s BBQ on Friday night. Good food and a fun atmosphere for dinner.

Breakfast on Saturday morning was at the Egg and I. Unique breakfast menu, I opted for the Egg-ceptional omelet, filling and tasty.

Saturday my plans where to locate a local light house for some pictures. Unfortunately a part of the town was closed down for a sidewalk arts and crafts festival. It made driving a bit of a hassle so I decided against dealing with what could have been a long drive and chose to look for it on Sunday before my drive home.

Slow-Traffic-Ahead-Sign-X-W23-1

After deciding not to look for the lighthouse I turned around and headed back to Old Orchard Beach. The boardwalk boasts having the only beachfront amusement park in New England. Having about 30 rides ranging from kiddie rides, thrill rides and roller coasters.

The rest of the board walk is filled with gift shops, t-shirt shops, bars, restaurants and other types of concessions.

One of the best stores was Dickenson’s Candy Shop. It was a very fun store to just walk around and they even have a sampling of sugar free candies as well.

After more than two and a half hours of walking around and viewing the sights and visiting gift shops it was off the beach for a nice country drive. Dinner was at the Longhorn Steakhouse. Great food at a good price.

Sunday morning brought heavy rain. Not a real big deal my main plans for the day is to drive home. I did take a drive to the coast to look for the light house but I think the rain cut down visibility and was not able to see it. Drive home took a bit longer than I had expected but it was still a fun drive.

WHY ?

Tortured twisted and empty. That is how I feel right now. Why, because of the thoughts of a woman who touched my life in a very profound way. Over Skype we talked  and talked and talked. Then she just pushed me away. That would be fine but then she pulled me back and pushed me away again and again.

We met in September of 2013 in a fun chat room. That night was a birthday party for a couple of other people that hung out there and it was full of fun and laughs. This was the first time she was in the room and at that time I had no idea the impact she was going to have on my life.

We became friends and then I fell in love with her. Damn how much i wish that she had just laughed at me the day that I told her that. Instead it brought us closer. She never said those three words to me but she said enough other things to me that made me realized how she felt about me.

Her job was the reason she told me that we could not have any thing between us. I did not like this but I did understand and accepted it and stepped aside so that we could both go on with our lives.

All would have been fine if that was the end of my tale, but of course it is not. After a month of not communicating in any way she contacted me. She started the IM off with the comment ” I know i should not be doing this but I miss you terribly.”

What can I do, what can I say other than the truth. I missed her more than I can describe. So we reconnected for a few months.

Then she did it again. We cant do this because of work. And again I stepped aside and let her go.

Then she came back again with news that she has a terrible sickness. She felt that she needed to tell me this. For the first couple of weeks there was contact between us every day. Then she just dropped out of site. Not a single IM or nothing from her. At the end of the first week I started to wonder if she was ok or had the disease taken her. Through the next week I realized that if anything ever happened to her I would never know.

Then she sent me an IM.  A broncitis attack on top of everything else put her in bed for the two weeks. Relieved that she was ok I left it alone for a while. Just before Christmas she found out that the sickness was gone.

A couple of weeks later she hit me with the job thing again.  That was a month and a half ago now. I still leave her alone. I want to contact her and tell her that I miss her but what good does it do. She is the one who put the restriction on me and i have already tried everything i can think of to get her to look at things from a different perspective.

The biggest problem for me right now is that I am really hoping that she will contact me again. I wish i could say that i am not expecting it but she keeps doing it. I know what I want to say to her if she does contact me again but I am not sure if i will be able to say the things that need to be said.
